When you make a trip like this one, there is only so much that you can actually plan in advance. Then, you have to be willing to fill in with discoveries you make along the way. Today was a day to pursue one of those potential discoveries.
On Saturday evening, at the Carter Family Fold, one of the performers made an announcement about an event to be taking place Monday evening at the Pickin’ Porch in Bristol, TN. This performer, Tim White, was having a CD-release “party.” Each Monday at the Pickin’ Porch, evidently, there are free performances. This week Tim’s band was going to be performing and introducing a new CD they had published. Having heard about this, we decided to head over and check it out.
One of the first people we ran into was “Barney Fife.”
This fellow is an entertainer, and has been enjoying impersonating the famous deputy from Mayberry for the past 20 years or so. He was a fun part of the evening with his stories and jokes. He even joined the band for one song about Thelma Lou.
Tim’s band was very good, and the songs they played were a lot of fun. Most of them were humorous, with down-home themes about everything from home-grown tomatoes to left-lane-hogging drivers.
I’m really glad there was room in our schedule for a fun, off-agenda exploration. It really paid off today.
